New York Sugar Prices Surge to Highest Level Since January

New York sugar futures saw a significant surge on Wednesday, with the May contract reaching its highest level since January, closing at 14.80 cents per pound, up 2.42%. This rally is primarily driven by soaring gasoline prices, which hit a three-year high, encouraging more sugarcane to be diverted to ethanol production and reducing sugar supply. Favorable rainfall in Brazil's Center-South region is also closely monitored for its impact on the upcoming harvest.

Sugar futures prices experienced a significant increase on Wednesday, the 18th, with the May contract in New York reaching its highest level since January. The price closed the day at 14.80 cents per pound, marking a 2.42% rise. The primary factor behind this price appreciation is the surge in gasoline prices, which have reached a three-year high. According to analysts from Barchart, this trend is expected to stimulate ethanol production. Consequently, mills are likely to divert more sugarcane towards biofuel production, thereby reducing the supply of sugar in the market. Furthermore, the market is closely monitoring the development of Brazil's sugarcane harvest. Rainfall in the Center-South region of the country has been favorable for sugarcane growth. According to Czarnikow consultancy, the last time the region recorded similar precipitation levels was in 2023, which resulted in a record harvest. Therefore, the volume of rainfall in the second half of March will be crucial for the start of the harvest season.
