China's Sugarcane Imports See Significant Growth in Jan-Feb 2026, Myanmar and Laos Major Sources

According to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs of China, the country's sugarcane imports showed significant growth during January and February 2026. In the first two months of the year, China's cumulative sugarcane imports reached a total of 1.5332 million tons, marking an increase of 67,500 tons compared to the same period last year. Specifically, sugarcane imports in January amounted to 921,800 tons, a substantial year-on-year increase of 219,400 tons. However, imports in February saw a decline, reaching 611,400 tons, a decrease of 151,900 tons compared to the previous year. Despite the dip in February, the cumulative data for the first two months still reflects positive growth. Regarding the distribution of import sources, Myanmar remains China's primary sugarcane supplier, with imports totaling 1.037 million tons, accounting for 67.64% of the total. Laos followed, contributing 443,100 tons, or 28.90%. Vietnam also held a small market share, with imports of 53,100 tons, representing 3.46%. In terms of importing provinces, Yunnan Province was the absolute dominant player, importing 1.4863 million tons, which is 96.94% of the national total. Guangxi Province also imported 46,900 tons, accounting for 3.06%. This indicates particularly strong demand for overseas sugarcane in China's southwestern regions. Notably, as of the end of February in the 2025/26 crushing season, China's cumulative sugarcane imports have reached 2.5428 million tons, an increase of 201,000 tons year-on-year. This further confirms the growing reliance and demand of China's sugar industry on international sugarcane resources.
