Maritime Sector Shows Favorable Signs for Brazilian Ethanol, Says Navy Commander

The maritime sector's energy transition presents significant opportunities for Brazilian ethanol and methanol producers, according to a Brazilian Navy commander. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) aims to improve ship energy efficiency by 40% by 2030. IMO regulations directly impact vessels globally, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and opening new markets for Brazilian biofuels.

The maritime sector is poised to open a significant window of opportunity for Brazilian ethanol and methanol producers. This assessment comes from Commander Flávio Haruo Mathuiy, an advisor to the coordinating committee for International Maritime Organization (IMO) affairs, who expressed strong confidence in this emerging market. According to Mathuiy, the energy transition process in maritime transport has been underway for a long time, with the IMO establishing measures aimed at improving ship efficiency in both technical and operational aspects. He noted, "The forecast is that we will be able to improve the energy efficiency of ships by 40% by 2030. This is a very significant advance." The Navy commander further explained that the IMO is a specialized agency of the UN, and its decisions can "change the behavior of maritime transport in a short period and on a global scale." This is possible, he stated, because IMO's determinations do not fall upon countries—as is the case with other agencies, requiring internalization by member states—but directly upon the ships themselves. Mathuiy elaborated, "To be able to operate, a ship must comply with IMO decisions. It must be in accordance with the approved regulations. Otherwise, cargo will not be able to dock in ports in China, Europe, or the United States." He concluded, "This reach of IMO's decisions is what makes it so special."
