Oil Price Hike Drives Potencial Group's Biofuel Investments to R$6 Billion

Brazil's Potencial Group has raised its investment plan to R$6 billion by 2030, aiming to expand its corn ethanol and soybean crushing capacities. This strategic move capitalizes on rising oil prices, fueled by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which creates opportunities for the biofuel sector. The company plans to more than double its corn ethanol processing, significantly boost soybean crushing, and increase biodiesel production to solidify its leading position in the Americas' biofuel market.

Brazil's Potencial Group, a family-owned enterprise prominent in fuel distribution and agribusiness, has increased its investment plan to approximately R$6 billion by 2030. This substantial investment is earmarked for expanding the capacities of its corn ethanol projects and a soybean crushing plant designed to supply its biodiesel industry, a senior company executive informed Reuters. Headquartered in Paraná, Brazil's second-largest grain-producing state, Potencial announced its corn ethanol project last August. However, in light of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has driven up oil prices and created significant opportunities for Brazil's biofuel sector, the company decided to more than double its initial corn processing capacity to 2.6 million tons per year. Furthermore, the group's soybean processing plant, inaugurated this Wednesday at its complex in Lapa, Paraná, will also see its capacity more than double from its current level to 2.5 million tons per year, according to Potencial's revised plans. This expansion aims to meet the growing demand for soybean oil, which will be consumed by the company's biodiesel factory. Currently, the company's biodiesel plant can produce 900 million liters annually, making it the largest individual biofuel production unit in the Americas, according to Potencial's data. Under the new strategy, its capacity will further increase to 1.65 billion liters by early 2027. Potencial Group firmly believes in the vertical integration of processes as a cornerstone of its strategic success.
