BP Bioenergy's Sugarcane Crops Delayed by Two Months Due to Drought

BP Bioenergy is facing a significant two-month delay in its sugarcane crop growth, primarily due to persistent drought and extensive fires in 2024. The Guariroba unit alone saw 38% of its area affected. The company is grappling with reduced productivity and is actively implementing new strategies and technologies to mitigate the impact of these climatic challenges.

BP Bioenergy is currently grappling with a significant challenge: its sugarcane crops are experiencing a growth delay of approximately two months. This setback is primarily attributed to persistent drought conditions and extensive fires that ravaged 35,140 hectares of its planted area in 2024. According to Mario Sérgio Salani Junior, the company's Senior Manager of Agricultural Mechanization, these issues have not only impacted current yields but are also expected to affect productivity in 2025. The Guariroba unit, located in Pontes Gestal, São Paulo, was particularly hard hit, with over 10,000 hectares—equivalent to 38% of its total area—affected by fires. Salani Junior stated, "We experienced losses in ratoons and productivity, and this challenge has been ongoing." In response to these adversities, BP Bioenergy has been compelled to modify its operational strategies and integrate more advanced technology for fire management. While the company has made progress in containing fires, the broader impact of climate remains a critical factor. Salani Junior noted that the sustained lack of water has resulted in "delayed" crop development. He elaborated, "Now in March, our sugarcane fields exhibit characteristics typical of January; this represents about a 60-day delay in growth." For Salani Junior, a primary challenge in mechanization amidst fluctuating productivity is ensuring that machinery remains operational.
