Five Trading Firms Dominated Nearly 60% of Sugar Exports in 2025

Five major trading companies concentrated nearly 60% of Brazil's sugar exports in 2025, totaling 31.01 million tonnes, according to Williams maritime agency. Asia's Wilmar was the top exporter for the fourth consecutive year, shipping 4.94 million tonnes. Despite a slight year-on-year decrease, this volume represents the second highest in historical records.

According to the latest monitoring data from the Williams maritime agency, Brazil's sugar export market in 2025 showed significant concentration, with five major trading companies accounting for nearly 60% of the total exports. Asia's trading giant, Wilmar, maintained its position as the top exporter of Brazilian sugar for the fourth consecutive year, shipping a total of 4.94 million tonnes via ship holds. Overall, Brazil exported 31.01 million tonnes of sugar to international markets in 2025. This figure represents an 8.9% decrease compared to the 34.03 million tonnes exported in the previous year. Nevertheless, this export volume remains the second highest in the historical series, which began in 2011, underscoring Brazil's crucial role in global sugar supply. However, data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex) indicates that between January and December 2025, Brazilian sweetener exports reached 33.77 million tonnes, an 11.7% drop from the previous year. During this period, the average price was US$417.74 per tonne, a 14.1% decrease from 2024. Consequently, the revenue generated from these exports fell by 24.2%, totaling US$14.11 billion. The discrepancy in volume between the Williams agency and Secex data is attributed to their differing methodologies. The maritime agency primarily accounts for exports declared at ports via ship holds, while consolidated figures for container shipments are reported separately.
