Renuka Vale do Ivaí Sugar Mill Added to 'Slave Labor Dirty List'
Brazil's Renuka Vale do Ivaí sugar mill has been added to the Ministry of Labor and Employment's 'dirty list' for slave labor due to conditions found in 2025. Over 50 indigenous workers, recruited from Mato Grosso do Sul by a third-party company, were rescued from a lodging in Itambé, Paraná, where they were subjected to conditions analogous to slavery while working for the mill.
The Renuka Vale do Ivaí sugar mill, located in São Pedro do Ivaí, Paraná, has been included in Brazil's Ministry of Labor and Employment's 'dirty list' for slave labor. This public document, accessible to all citizens, was updated this past Monday, the 6th, with the company's name appearing on page 40.
The latest update to the list saw the addition of 169 entities, comprising 102 individuals and 67 legal entities. All were found to have subjected workers to conditions analogous to slavery. According to the Ministry of Labor, the document includes cases judged between 2020 and 2025, where administrative processes have been concluded without the right to appeal. The Federal Government stipulates that each company or individual included will remain on the registry for two years. Removal is contingent upon regularization and the absence of new complaints during this period. The document is updated biannually, in April and October.
Renuka Vale do Ivaí's inclusion stems from a case recorded in October 2025, when over 50 indigenous workers were rescued from conditions analogous to slavery at a lodging in Itambé, Paraná. Labor Ministry inspectors reported at the time that these workers had been recruited by a third-party company from a village in Mato Grosso do Sul, under the promise of employment at the São Pedro do Ivaí mill. The work in Paraná, which was scheduled to begin in July 2025, was ultimately terminated.
