Banana/CEPEA: Increased Nanica Banana Supply Pressures Prices
According to the CEPEA research center, the supply of Nanica bananas is increasing as per the production calendar, with a more concentrated offering expected between April and June. This surge, coupled with reduced shipments due to canceled wholesale orders during the Tiradentes national holiday, is exerting downward pressure on prices. In contrast, Prata banana supply remains restricted.
The CEPEA research center at the University of São Paulo reports a significant increase in the production of Nanica bananas, aligning with the seasonal production calendar. This surge in supply is anticipated to be more concentrated between April and June, exerting considerable downward pressure on market prices.
CEPEA's analysis further indicates that, in addition to the natural increase in Nanica banana availability, there has been a reduction in the number of shipments. This decrease is primarily attributed to the cancellation of wholesale orders during the Tiradentes national holiday on April 21st, directly impacting market demand and logistics.
Researchers highlight a contrasting situation for Prata bananas, whose supply remains restricted in regions such as northern Santa Catarina and the Ribeira Valley (São Paulo). These areas are not expected to see more significant volumes of Prata bananas until the second half of the year. Within this market dynamic, Nanica banana prices experienced increased pressure between April 13th and 17th.
