True Academy Fantasia Judge Criticized Over Contestant's English Usage

A judge on the popular Thai reality competition show, 'True Academy Fantasia 2026,' recently drew significant criticism for comments made regarding a contestant's use of English. The controversy unfolded during a live audition on May 6, following the show's initial online audition phase which began on March 8. The incident involved a teenage contestant of half-Thai, half-American heritage. During his interaction with judges Krisda “Pond” Witthayakhajorndet and Panthapol “Ohm” Prasarnrajkit, he performed with a guitar and communicated in both Thai and English. Judge Pond questioned the contestant's English usage and inquired about his educational background. The teenager explained that he is enrolled in an international program at Suankularb Wittayalai School. Pond then asked about the language spoken at home, to which the contestant replied that he primarily speaks English with his family, as his father is American. Following this, Pond remarked, “Personally, I feel like you could try to speak a little more Thai because it makes us feel like… We don’t know how to understand. Everyone understands English for sure, but the context and tone sometimes make it feel like… it comes across as a bit showing off.” Fellow judge Ohm, however, expressed understanding for the contestant's English usage, stating, “He grows up like this.” While Pond acknowledged the teenager's musical ability, he reiterated his suggestion for the contestant to use more Thai in conversation.
