Phuket Locals Outraged as Foreign Teens Damage Property, Police Make Arrests

Phuket locals are demanding decisive action from authorities after foreign teenagers were apprehended for property damage. On May 17, Phuket police arrested four foreign teenagers accused of stealing and damaging a lampshade from outside a resident's home. The video showed one of the foreign teenagers removing a lampshade hanging outside a house before walking away with friends. The suspect was described as wearing a black T-shirt, white shorts, and trainers. The damaged lampshade was later discovered broken near the scene of the crime. Officers from Mueang Phuket Police Station confirmed the arrests, stating that the four teenagers were initially detained at accommodation in the Thalang district before being brought in for questioning. According to police, the group comprised four foreign nationals aged between 15 and 18. The teenagers reportedly admitted to the act, attributing their actions to recklessness. However, the police's decision not to disclose the specific legal charges or penalties levied against the group drew criticism from some locals in the comment section of the Phuket Times report. Several Phuket residents urged the police to adopt a stricter approach to deter criminal behavior by foreign visitors and to foster greater respect for local communities and public property. One social media user suggested that the offense could fall under Thailand's Criminal Law concerning night-time theft, which carries potential penalties of one to five years in prison, a fine ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 baht, or both. Other online commentators speculated that the teenagers might only face minor fines before their release. This incident echoes a similar case from last year, where a foreign man was caught on CCTV stealing a Thai national flag from outside an office in Phuket.
