Citrus/CEPEA: Increased Supply Leads to Drop in Ponkan Tangerine Prices
According to CEPEA data, the supply of Ponkan tangerines has significantly increased this month as the harvest gains momentum in major producing regions, putting downward pressure on prices. As of May 21st, the average price for a 27.2 kg box was R$57.24, a 10.6% decrease from the previous month. While quality is generally satisfactory, recent rains have hampered harvesting and affected some batches.
According to data from the University of São Paulo's research center (CEPEA), the availability of Ponkan tangerines has seen a significant increase throughout this month. The harvest is gaining momentum in the primary producing regions, which has exerted downward pressure on prices.
As of May 21st, the average commercial price for a 27.2 kg box of Ponkan tangerines was R$57.24, representing a 10.6% reduction compared to the previous month's figures. CEPEA researchers indicate that the overall quality of the fruit is satisfactory. However, recent rainfall has complicated harvesting efforts and affected some batches, leaving certain fruits below the optimal conditions expected for this stage of the harvest. In addition to the typical seasonal increase in supply, the market is also exhibiting increasingly noticeable shifts.
