CEPEA/Chicken Market: May Sees Stable Chicken Meat Prices, Live Chicken Values Rise

According to CEPEA data, the average monthly prices for chilled and frozen whole chickens in Greater São Paulo remained largely stable in May. Conversely, live chicken prices in São Paulo state saw a considerable increase from April to May, primarily due to adjustments in housing costs. Despite an initial rise in demand early in the month, the competitiveness of poultry meat was affected by the devaluation of beef and pork carcasses.

According to data from CEPEA (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics) at the University of São Paulo, the average monthly prices for chilled and frozen whole chickens traded in Greater São Paulo remained largely stable during May 2026. In contrast, live chicken prices in São Paulo state experienced a considerable increase from April to May, primarily attributed to adjustments in housing costs for poultry. CEPEA highlighted that, as is typical for the period, demand for chicken meat rose in the first half of May due to salary payments, which led to higher prices for cuts and whole chickens. However, throughout the month, the competitiveness of poultry meat was somewhat undermined by the devaluation observed in its two main competitors: beef and pork carcasses.
