Thai Police Apprehend Heroin Courier Linked to Flight Attendant's Arrest

Phitsanulok police have apprehended a 47-year-old man suspected of delivering heroin to a Thai flight attendant who was recently arrested in Australia for drug possession. The suspect, identified as Uthai Khanaphiwat, an ethnic Hmong from Nan province, was taken into custody at 10:30 PM on July 3rd at an old bus terminal in Mueang district, Phitsanulok. This arrest follows the detention of flight attendant Meena by Australian customs and federal police, who discovered drugs in her possession. Samran Nuanma, chief of the Narcotics Suppression Centre, stated that investigators traced Uthai through 59-year-old driver Atirach Supian, whom Uthai allegedly paid to deliver a package to Meena at a condominium in Bang Na on June 22nd. On July 4th, officers escorted Uthai to his rented room to confirm evidence. Forensic specialists utilized Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to test white powder found in torn elephant-print fabric, confirming it to be heroin. Uthai reportedly acknowledged that the fabric had contained the illicit drugs. Uthai confessed to traveling to Chiang Kham on June 20th to collect bags filled with heroin, which he then stored in his room. Upon learning of Meena's arrest, he flushed the remaining heroin down the toilet and discarded some bags in an attempt to destroy evidence. Items recovered on July 4th, reportedly returned from the Soi Suea Yai area, showed heroin residue readings of nearly 900 out of 1,000 points. Uthai claimed he was paid 60,000 baht (approximately US$1,650) for each delivery and had completed three such runs. He communicated with his contact, known only by the code name 'Rinrin,' via a Line group, stating he did not know their true identity. He further explained that he did not pack the heroin himself but rather re-packaged already sealed bags before delivery, consistently using the same driver, Atirach, whom he contacted by phone. Police have not ruled out Atirach's involvement and are currently gathering evidence to determine if a further arrest warrant is warranted. Officers also confirmed Uthai was the individual seen in surveillance footage wearing a blue hoodie.
