Thai Airport Security Heightened Following Flight Attendant's Arrest in Australia

Thailand's Ministry of Transport has significantly tightened airport baggage screening procedures for both passengers and cabin crew across the nation. This move follows the arrest of a Thai flight attendant in Australia, who was allegedly involved in a drug smuggling case. Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat, representing Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, attended a meeting with the Narcotics Prevention and Suppression Committee and other relevant agencies to address the issue. Following the meeting, Siripong stated that while current baggage screenings for passengers and crew already adhere to international standards, and authorities regularly make arrests and seize narcotics during inspections, drug trafficking networks constantly adapt their methods to bypass security. This necessitates a robust enhancement of screening measures at all airports nationwide. Siripong outlined that the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) will collaborate with airlines to implement additional security protocols. These include evaluating a potential ban on shopping courier services utilized by cabin crew, intensifying training for X-ray screening personnel, improving intelligence sharing regarding suspected drug trafficking activities, and deploying a greater number of drug detection dogs. He further noted that over 60 K9 units from the Royal Thai Police will join forces with dogs from the Customs Department to bolster airport screening operations. This announcement comes after a Thai Airways flight attendant, identified as Mina, was apprehended at Melbourne Airport on June 25. Australian authorities discovered approximately one kilogram of heroin concealed within 12 tote bags. Thai police have since expanded their investigation into the suspected trafficking network, leading to the recent arrest of another suspect, 47-year-old Uthai.
