Thailand's Sugar Exports Soar Amid Favorable Weather and Weaker Baht
Thailand's sugar exports are set for a strong performance in the current marketing year, driven by favorable weather conditions leading to excellent sugarcane yields and a weaker Thai Baht. Analysts project exports to comfortably exceed 8 million metric tons, boosting competitiveness and attracting key importers like Indonesia and China.
Bangkok, Thailand – Thailand, a major global sugar exporter, is poised for a robust performance in the current marketing year, with analysts forecasting significant export volumes. Favorable weather conditions during the 2025/26 growing season have led to excellent sugarcane yields, surpassing initial expectations. This has resulted in a healthy surplus available for international markets. Furthermore, a relatively weaker Thai Baht against the US Dollar has made Thai sugar more competitive on the global stage, attracting increased interest from key importing nations, particularly Indonesia and China. Industry reports indicate that Thai mills are operating at full capacity, efficiently processing the abundant cane harvest. While global prices have experienced volatility, Thailand's consistent supply and competitive pricing have enabled it to capture a larger share of the international market. The Thai Sugar Millers Corporation (TSMC) projects exports to comfortably surpass 8 million metric tons for the season, marking a significant increase from the previous year. This positive outlook provides a much-needed boost to the Thai agricultural sector and helps to partially offset supply concerns originating from other major producers. The government is also actively exploring new trade agreements to further diversify its export markets.
